This rose TB wants to see lots of the different symbols for different states or countries! That could be the state flower, like the Bluebonnets in Texas, or the national animal, like the Royal Bengal Tiger in Bangladesh. This is an educational TB, so be creative, and tell us in your log about what you find! There are any number of state & national symbols, all the way from the National River of India (the Ganges) to the state insect of Delaware (ladybug) to the Prime Minister of Australia (Tony Abbott at the time of the TB's release). If you have the time, please post some pictures of the symbols you find in your travels around the world!
While compass or wind roses are not symbols for a specific state or country, they are symbols with a long and rich histories. The compass rose was used on maps or nautical charts to display the orientation of the cardinal directions- North, South, East and West. The wind rose was also displayed on maps, but it instead displayed the names of the winds that originated from each direction- winds with names like Phoenicias, Thrascias, and Zephyrus. These compass or wind roses can be quite ornate and are very pretty while still maintaining their functionality!
