I would like to visit places where there are other butterflies
Here are some suggestions. We butterflies are cold-blooded so we like to bask in the sun—a warm rock is especially nice. When I’m ready to mate, I often look for the top of a hill—especially an open one, because the males hang around there waiting for us gals to show up. Another place I can often find my butterfly friends is around sandy mud puddles. The water makes a great drink and the salts found there are especially good. Of course we love the nectar of flowers. It’s important though for us to have the right plant to lay our eggs on. We especially like the plants that we evolved with—the natives. Our caterpillars have their favorite foods, so you have to know food source for each different variety of butterfly—often trees, like the paw paw, or wild cherry, or spicebushes, or even common trees such as tulip trees and oaks. All of these were growing in Nature Conservancy’s Wildcat Mountain Preserve in Virginia, the place I started my journey.
