About This Item

  • The Mallard is the most common duck found in all flyways.
  • The males, or drakes, are also called "Greenheads".
  • Main wintering area is the lower Mississippi basin, and along the gulf coast, but many say as far north as open waters permit.
  • Flocks often feed in early morning and late afternoon in nearby haravested fields, returning to marshes and creeks to spend the night.
  • Flight is not particularly rapid.
  • Hens have a loud "QUACK".
  • Drake is a low-pitched "kwek-kwek".
  • 20-23" (51-58.5xn)
  • Male:  Glossy green head, mahogany breast, narrow white collar, yellow bill, orange legs and feet, gray sides
  • Female: difficult to distinguish from Black Duck, but mallard has white on both sides of speculum
  • Nest: Cup of leaves and grass on ground, lined with down
  • Eggs:  5-14, greenish white
  • Dabbling duck
