GARLAND, TEXAS: Troop 1199 was founded in November, 1999 when the families of several Boy Scouts in North Garland identified a need for a new Troop in the area. Originally, a parent-formed organization, the Concerned Parents of North Garland, chartered the Troop until another organization was found as a sponsor. In May, 2014, Troop 1199 was fortunate to become chartered by Buckingham United Methodist Church.
Troop 1199 is a vibrant group based on the aims of Scouting, which include character development, citizenship, leadership, and personal fitness using the patrol method and outdoor activities. Since 1999, Troop 1199 has advanced more than 70 Eagle Scouts and continues to have many adventures today.
In 2019, with the blessing of Buckingham United Methodist Church, the troop committee voted to start a linked girl's troop to serve the young women in North Garland. Under the recently rebranded Scouts BSA moniker, Troop 1199 is now two troops: BT1199 for boys and GT1199 for girls. As linked troops, the two groups share a single troop committee and equipment, but each troop has separate youth and adult leadership. Typically, meetings start and end together, but the troops will sometimes split for separate activities. The youth leadership may choose to have campouts and outings together or separately based on the interests of each troop.
