The flag of Syria is a red, white and black tricolor with two green stars. It was adopted in 1958 with the establishment of the United Arab Republic and abandoned in 1961 with dissolution of this state. The flag was re-adopted by Syria in 1980. The two stars represent Egypt and Syria, the two participating countries in the United Arab Republic. The flag uses a subset of the Pan-Arab colors in which green is less prominent. It shares this design with the related flags of Egypt, Iraq, Sudan, Yemen, and the 1969-1972 flag of Libya.
The term Pan-African colours refers to two different sets of three colours: green, yellow and red (inspired by the flag of Ethiopia), and red, green and black (which were adopted by the United States-based Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League, or UNIA). They are used in flags and other emblems of various countries and territories in Africa and the Americas to represent Pan-Africanist ideology.
