My name Bruce the vegetarian Basking Shark – sieht man doch, ich bin Bruce der vegetarische Riesenhai
The classic view on sharks describes us as solitary hunters, ranging the oceans in search of food. However, this applies to only a few species – I am only partially amongst them: I am a Basking Shark, swimming long distances, but eating only oceanic plankton. Shark migration patterns may be even more complex than those of birds, with many sharks covering entire ocean basins. To emulate my big relatives behavior I want to travel as far as possible – no matter where.
Some more info about Basking Sharks from Wikipedia:
A three year study of the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth in 2002, which observed 21 Basking Sharks with GPS transmitters, showed that they move huge distance in the open ocean on search for food and that they dive 700 metres deep. Satellite tagging also confirmed basking sharks move thousands of kilometres during the winter months, seeking plankton blooms.
A 2009 study tagged 25 sharks off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and indicated at least some individuals migrate south in the winter (up to 9,000 kilometres). Remaining at depths between 200 metres (660 ft) and 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) for many weeks, the tagged sharks crossed the equator to reach Brazil. One individual spent a month near the mouth of the Amazon River. It is unknown why they undertake this journey.
