There are an estimated 7,000 to 11,200 wolves in Alaska and more than 5,000 in the lower 48 states. Around the world there are an estimated 200,000 in 57 countries, compared to up to 2 million in earlier times.
Overall, the greatest threat to wolves is people's fear and misunderstanding about the species. Many fairy tales and myths tend to misrepresent wolves as villainous, dangerous creatures.
The mission of "Wolf Song" is to travel the world as an ambassador for wolves.
“Maa'iingan-nagamon” Wolf Song
By the cover of the night, you sing your song to the moon…
Most people think it’s just a howl
To me, it’s just beautiful music that you sing to the sky
“Enchanting, chilling and exciting” is how many have described hearing the howl of a wolf.
On a fishing trip to Ely, MN several years ago several members of my family and myself went out on a ranger guided "wolf howl." The ranger took a large group of us out on a trail where wolves had been heard howling. After demonstrating how to howl and explaining what to listen for, the ranger tried to get the wolves to howl back to him. He had no luck and we were disappointed. The next morning very early I took my nephew out fishing. I had just cut the motor and then we heard it! A lone howl rang out across the lake, joined very quickly by another, then another. Very soon we were surrounded by howls. We sat transfixed surrounded by what I called wolves singing. The wolves were communicating with each other the way they’ve done for thousands of years and my nephew and I were allowed to be part of it
I have never forgotten what it felt like to hear that sound. I live in wolf country and have had them cross my lake. Sadly, I have never heard their song again.

"They say the wolf bestows its happy spirit to help people. Women who obtain this spirit become skilled in creative endeavors and experience a strengthening of the senses. I would like to think there is some truth to this in my own life." -Judi Rideout
