A highly contagious strain of the Bacillus traversus (commonly known as the “travel bug”) is popping up at US geocaches . The source of the outbreak has been linked to an avid geocacher in the Kansas City area. Each of the 5 strains is expected to spread east and north, following interstates all the way to northern Michigan., where a team of experts is waiting to collect specimens as they are transmitted to caches in this region. It is hoped that they will mostly be contained in Midland and Clare Counties.
