The Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England played a major role in the history of astronomy and navigation. Astronomers have used the Royal Observatory as a basis for measurement. The Prime Meridian passes through the Observatory, it is the line which longitude is determined at 0 degrees! Around the world there were several different starting points of geographical coordinates, but when they all came together with one joint measurement system there was discrepancies of where the prime meridian lay. England's original prime meridian lay at W 0°00'0.00 and after the change to the new system they discovered it was out 102.5 meters to the east making the actual surveyed line at the observatory at W 0°00'05.31 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) also started here!
