O objectivo deste meu primeiro TB é, de certa forma, dar a conhecer ao mundo, através da sua viagem que agora começa, o meu Alentejo, província portuguesa, região onde nasci e vivo, através de um dos seus simbolos.
Neste contexto, a missão do TB "Ovelha Alentejana" é dar, no mínimo, uma volta ao mundo visitando, pelo menos uma vez, o continente americano, africano, europeu, asiático e a Oceânia. Depois regressará ao Alentejo, seu lar...

The purpose of this first TB is, somehow, to show the world, through its journey that now begins, the Alentejo, a Portuguese province, a region where I was born and live, through one of its symbols.

A Ovelha Alentejana
A ovelha (Ovis Aries) é uma das imagens de marca que caracteriza o Alentejo, província que representa quase metade do território português.
A imagem deste animal é tão importante que uma das feiras mais conhecidas do Alentejo (a Ovibeja), tem um nome que deriva do seu nome em latim, Ovis.
As ovelhas foram dos primeiros animais a serem domesticados, há cerca de 10000 anos no Médio Oriente, zona onde surgiram as primeiras grandes civilizações.
A facilidade em lidar com este animal, devido ao seu comportamento dócil, terá sido um dos motivos da escolha; isto claro, para além de ser uma fonte de carne, leite e derivados (como queijo), lã e couro.
Pensa-se que podem ter descendido dos muflões (Ovis orientalis). Estes ovinos parecem ter chegado à Península com as viagens dos fenícios, gregos e cartagineses, nas suas jornadas de comércio, vindos da Ásia ou do norte de África. Um dos locais de fabrico de bons tecidos de lã foi Alcácer do Sal, o que nos faz supôr a existência de animais de lã na região que é hoje o Alentejo.
A ovelha, na imagem do cordeiro, tem também, no Alentejo, uma forte conotação com a religião cristã. Cordeiro de Deus ou em latim, Agnus Dei, é uma expressão utilizada no cristianismo para se referir a Jesus Cristo, identificado como o salvador da humanidade, ao ter sido sacrificado em resgate pelo pecado original.
Ainda hoje, durante a Páscoa, existe a tradição, no Alentejo, de comer borrego assado, sendo esta uma refeição em família. Esta tradição pode estar relacionada com a representação da morte de Cristo pelos pecados da Humanidade, bem como tomar em si o Corpo de Deus.

The Portuguese Alentejo's Sheep
The Sheep (Ovis Aries) is one of the hallmarks that best represents the Alentejo, a portuguese province which represents almost half of all the portuguese territory.
It's such an important animal that one of the most well known festivity in Alentejo (Ovibeja), has its name from the sheep's latin name, Ovis.
Sheep are amongst the first animals domesticated by man, about 10000 years ago in the Middle East, home to the first great civilizations.
The ease in dealing with this animal, because of their docile behavior, may be one of the reasons for such choice; this of course, besides being a source of meat, dairy products (like cheese or milk), wool and leather.
It is thought that they may descend from mouflons (Ovis orientalis). These sheep seem to have entered the Iberian Peninsula with the Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians, while traders, from Asia or North Africa. A well known region for manufacturing fine wool fabrics was Alcacer do Sal, which leads us to suppose that there were already sheep in Alentejo, at that time.
The sheep, the image of the lamb, has also, in Alentejo, a strong resonance with the Christian religion. Lamb of God or in Latin, Agnus Dei, is a term used in Christianity to refer to Jesus Christ, identified as the savior of mankind, having been sacrificed for the redemption of original sin.
Even today, during Passover, there is the tradition in Alentejo, to eat roast lamb, this being a family meal. This tradition may be related to the representation of Christ's death for the sins of mankind and/ or to represent the act of receiving Christ in us.
