About This Item

Sputnik

Sputnik 1 was the first manmade satellite sent into space.

On october, 4th 1957, the soviet union sent Sputnik 1 into an elliptical orbit between 215km and 939km with an R-7 carrier rocket. It stayed there for 92 days.
The satellite was made of an aluminium globe which had an diameter of 58cm, onboard a short-wave transmitter with a transmitter-power of 1W. Two antennas of 2,4m and 2,9m in length made it possible that the coded signal could be received worldwide (with sensible receivers, and when the satellite was in sight). The signal revealed the inner pressure of the globe and the temperature.

On january, 4th 1958, the 83,6kg heavy "Sputnik 1" entered the denser atmosphere and burned up.

(would be happy if someone of you could translate the paragraph from denglisch to english ;-))
