About This Item

Minnesota State Parks
Geocaching History Challenge

In 2008 the state of Minnesota turned 150 years old! And in honor of this anniversary the Minnesota State Parks has organized a statewide Geocaching History Challenge. With 72 state parks there is plenty to keep you busy hunting for caches and moving travel bugs across the state, not to mention the great hikes, photo-worthy views and untouched landscapes you can find along the way to each cache.

Each of Minnesota’s 72 state parks has a special Geocaching History Challenge cache. Inside each cache are collectable park history trading cards and, if you’re lucky, a Minnesota Sesquicentennial medallion.

You can even earn a special silver medallion when you locate all of the state park caches in a region. A total of four regional medallions can be earned.

For those true geocachers who find all 72 Minnesota State Park caches – they can earn a really special gold medallion!

For more information on the Minnesota State Park Geocaching History Challenge visit www.mnstateparks.info.

The Minnesota State Park Geocaching History Challenge will run through December 31, 2008 – so start geocaching!!

It was nice to have a geocache challenge to use as an excuse to come back and visit this rich-in-history state park. We were here and completed the hiking club trail and took a tour of the mine in June 2004. We lucked out on the tour and it was just the two of us and a great guide. We were on the last tour of the day and she took some extra time with us and told us all kinds of interesting things. Dena was also here in the late 60's soon after it was set up for tours as a state park. At that time she stood with her parents and younger brother and watched how fast that cable went down into the shaft and everyone chickened out on going on the tour!

We saw four loons enjoying the lake at McCarthy Beach. As soon as we got the camera out they became very shy and kept diving out of sight! OK...maybe they were more hungry than shy especially since one of them seemed to be feeding another one. It probably was a parent and a baby together but that baby was as big as the parent!!!

Scenic State Park is so scenic that when we camped here in June 2004 Dena took a ton of pictures. She later had a picture that she took not too far from the "point" made into the background on her Visa Credit Card. This was state park #60...only 12 to go! Hang in there little TB; we are almost done!!!

The tour season for the open pit mine is over but luckily we had visited here in June 2004 and got to learn about the rich history of this area. It was a quick visit today since the gates were locked but at least this little TB can say..."I was there!"

Schoolcraft is a neat little rustic, state park with lots of history and a nice out of the way/get away from it all feeling. We enjoyed our camping outing here back in June 2004 and were glad to have the excuse to pop back for a quick visit to find the history challenge cache and to show this little TB this hidden gem of a park.
