Current Goal

This travel bug tag and brass clip hitchhiker want to travel from port to port. It has a special preference for Navy ports (e.g., Everett, San Diego, Mayport, Norfolk), but as they say, "any port in a storm". Please help it along, logging it in as it travels about.

About This Item

Duty days travel bug and brass clip hitchhiker

Brass clips like these are used for several purposes in Navy ships. One of the formal usages is to "bend" (connect) signal flags onto halyards; when the signal has been formed, the flags are hoisted into the air so they can be read by other Sailors. One of the informal uses of these brass clips is to clip key rings onto a belt loop. Because ships have many spaces that are locked with keyed locks, people responsible for those spaces need to have ready access to the keys. Keeping all of those keys handy, without having them all stuffed in your pockets, meant keeping a keyring clipped to a belt loop. I was a "snipe" (engineer) responsible for the propulsion plant, so had keys to all kinds of spaces, alleys, trunks, and so on, so needed to carry a lot of keys. I kept a brass clip like this attached to my uniform for several years while I was on a ship. To commemorate those days, I'm launching "Duty days".
