Current Goal

Travel the planet inspecting NAVSTAR GPS satellite operations worldwide as a salute to the men and women of the USAF's 50th Space Wing.

About This Item

50thSW

The 50th Space Wing is responsible for support of over 100 communications, navigation and surveillance satellites with their associated systems, including the NAVSTAR GPS Satellites, valued in total at over $40.4 billion.

The 50th SW and its predecessors trace their history back to 1941 when the 50th Pursuit Group activated at Selfridge Field, Mich. During World War II, the 50th served at a number of European bases from which crews flew fighter, escort and bombing missions. Crews of the 50th Fighter Group also participated in the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge.

During the Cold War, the 50th served primarily at Hahn Air Base, Germany. Operating a number of weapons systems from the F-84 Thunderjet to the F-16 Fighting Falcon, the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing, as it was then called, played a key role in America's defense.

From January to April 1991, the wing's aircrews flew "SCUD-busting" and airfield interdiction missions in support of Operation Desert Storm. The wing was renamed 50th SW and moved to Falcon AFB Jan. 30, 1992, replacing 2nd SW. Falcon AFB was renamed Schriever AFB June 5, 1998, in honor of retired Gen. Bernard A. Schriever, who pioneered the development of the nation's ballistic missile programs and is recognized as "the father of the U.S. Air Force's space and missile program."

As operators of our nation's military-mission satellite program, they are truly "MASTERS OF SPACE'.

A beautiful morning ride through the Navajo lands of New Mexico led to finding this cache. Driving this distance has led us to some interesting places and this is no exception. I heard Navajo spoken for the first time at the gas station near by. It is something that is probably a fading experience in this day and age so I feel very lucky. Onward to Texas and Oklahoma next!

First find in the high deserts of Arizona! This geocache might very well be the highest geocache I've ever found....it seemed like we were climbing and climbing higher all day! I'll have to look at the altitude readout on the GPS to find out for sure. Flagstaff is almost 7000 feet above sea level, though! The days of rest in Las Vegas were great....we were there but didn't even go to the strip.....we went off roading on the BLM lands down by Lake Mead. Now until Arkansas its going to be driving and Caching straight thru. Looking forward to some interesting themed caches in Texas and traveling along the "Mother Road" U.S Route 66.

Had a look at this coin and it was really cool.

This one will count as our Nevada cache for this trip. I'm still a little worried about bushes and rattlesnakes but I'm getting over it. The best thing is that I've introduced geocaching to a friend here and we now have another cacher in the fold. We'll be moving onto Arizona and New Mexico soon, but for now a much needed rest.

  • The cache
  • The high desert outside Las Vegas Rattlesnake country!

Decided to stop off I-15 on my way to Las Vegas because I had a little time on my hands. The high desert is beautiful when the visibility is good like this. (I have pictures, but no way to transfer them to the computer right now.) This is probably the most nervous I've ever been while geocaching since they seem to have a rattlesnake under every rock here. The cache was buried under some weathered wood so I chucked the heaviest stone I could find at it at least twice before I reached down. Being in Alaska has made me a pansy when it comes to snakes, I guess.
Sin city here we come!

I found my first California geocache today after spending the night at the "High Desert Inn" on Edwards AFB. We drove exactly 700 miles yesterday from Grant's Pass, Oregon almost all the way to Los Angeles. This is my first trip thru California. I wasn't all that impressed with it after spending 2 years in Alaska. The northern mountains were pretty but the central valley was over congested with people who don't know what a speed limit sign means. In California the motto seems to be "Gas until you see God...then brake!"
