Current Goal

Since I am a firefly, I like nighttime and the change from night to day.  Please help me travel to the coast in Maine and see the sun first rise over the US from atop Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, the first spot of land that the morning sun kisses.

At 1,532 feet, Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and is the first place to view sunrise in the United States from October 7 through March 6. It is one of over 20 mountains on Mount Desert Island, Maine, that were pushed up by earth's tectonic and volcanic forces millions of years ago. Were it not for the once huge glaciers that sheared off their tops, they would be even higher than what we see today.

Cadillac Mountain is actually in the city of Bar Harbor, Maine, a rising coastal resort with a unique blend of the ambiance of a Downeast Maine fishing village, combined with quiet New England sophistication, and expressed on a canvass that is covered with rugged geographical features. There is a wide array ofactivities and entertainment, both nature based and community based. Much revolves around the coast and the National Park itself. During season, there is a free bus service available to most important points on the and several on the mainland.

Cadillac Mountain is largely composed of pink granite with forests of spruce and pitch pine. Views of Acadia National Park from the top of the mountain are spectacular. And, when combined with tiny subalpine plants (such as cinquefoil), squat, gnarled trees, wild blueberries, and various sized boulders, it is unsurpassed. The Bar Harbor shopping district is to the northeast. TheCranberry Islands are to the southwest. During certain times of the year, visitors to the summit are the first to see the rising sun in the United States.

The winding and scenic road that ascends to the top of Cadillac Mountain is approximately 3.5 miles long and was officially opened in 1931. There are several small observation points along the way that offer prime viewing opportunities. It is easy to get caught up in the views while driving but remain attentive as much of the road is right beside steep cliff like areas. Excercise caution when getting in and out of your vehichle. During the 1880's, there was a slow cog railway excursion to the summit. But unfortunately, due to a much faster descent than expected, it was short lived.

Glowing, Glowing, Gone.

Remember watching fireflies light up your yard on hot summer nights? Fireflies are beautiful, mysterious, and magical—and for many of us, catching and spotting them is an important part of summer. But firefly populations are dwindling all over the country—and all over the world.

Why Are Fireflies Disappearing?

Nobody knows for sure. But most researchers blame two main factors: development and light pollution. Most species of fireflies thrive as larvae in rotting wood and forest litter at the margins of ponds and streams. And as they grow, they more or less stay where they were born.

How Can I Help Fireflies Recover?

Fireflies are disappearing all over the world, and it’s believed to be because of human encroachment on habitat and increased light pollution from development and traffic. But there are a few things you can do to help fireflies make a comeback in your area. Follow these steps, and with luck your yard will once again sparkle on summer nights.
