Penglais Woods/Parc Penglais.

Parc Penglais is situated on the A487 at the northern end of Aberystwyth. Once part of the Penglais Estate, the woodland was donated to the town by the University. It was designated by Cerdigion County Council as their first nature reserve in 1996 - a combination of beech and oak woodland and an old quarry, providing impressive views over Cardigan Bay. The wood is on a very steep hill with footpaths criss-crossing throughout, and alongside the neighbouring golf course. There is an abundance of wildflowers, herbs and fungi. In the springtime the ground is a carpet of bluebells as far as the eye can see and it really is worth a visit at this time. Birdlife is also plentiful including woodpecker, kestrel, nuthatch, tree creeper and migrants such as chiff chaff. This really is a magical place There are benches at strategic points around the woodland - bring a picnic or just sit and enjoy the sunshine and admire the views across town to the Ystwyth and Rheidol Valleys.

Access to the woodland is via the houses opposite the hospital car park on Penglais Hill, where you will be able to park quite easily. Take the first right turn and follow the road round and up. Park at the cul de sac where you will find some steps. Your GPS should lead you here.

There are several other entrances but these do not enable easy parking nearby. If arriving on foot you may enter via the small grassy area at the junction of Penglais Road and North Road. It is quite a long but pleasant walk from here to the cache.

Safety Notes: This is a public nature park and is relatively safe. However some of the paths are quite steep and may become muddy and slippery in wet weather. Care should be taken with young children if you go near the quarry area. The cache is not situated in or near the quarry. There are steps to be negotiated on the way up from any direction. THIS IS NOT SUITABLE FOR BUGGIES OR WHEELCHAIRS.

You are looking for a medium sized plastic container with a laminated First to Find certificate, usual swaps, 2 new batteries, log book and plastic bag for CITO. Please remember to take your rubbish home with you!

NB As the cache is situated in woodland the coordinates may not be accurate It is not far from a designated track although your GPS may point you through undergrowth to go direct to the site. Use your own discretion whilst searching!

I have added hints and spoilers - the photos in the gallery should help you find the right path.
