Gal here is always looking for a bargain and today I found one! While out traipsing around I pulled in to check out this peaceful spot. Although I have passed here many times in the past I had never taken the time to stop and explore.
Here you will find a building, albeit a simple one, which was erected in 1834 at a price of $621.21. Now, I’m sure back in the day that was quite a sum of money, but at todays prices it seems like bargain! Surprisingly, things seem to be well taken care of and in great shape.
Back when this area was thriving with the glass, iron, and lumber industries this building was filled to capacity. Sadly, it is no longer in use except for the first Sunday in October when the annual anniversary service is held.
Take some time to explore the area. The iron gates do open, however you have to lift them a bit, as they’ve sagged over time (haven’t we all?). Many prominent folks that settled the area are resting in the cemetery. Also, don’t miss the new historical sign which explains just what “Bargaintown” means.
The cache container is a camouflaged bison tube. The hide is not met to be overly difficult and you’ll likely guess the hidey spot when you pull up. For the most part you will have this little corner all to yourself, but during the summer months shore traffic may require you to be stealthier. As always, please be respectful of the area.
So remember, great deals can still be found today. Why in exchange for just a few moments of my time I learned a bit of history, saw some interesting sites, met some nice folks and placed a cache-that’s quite a bargain, to be sure!
