Another urban micro. Bring Tweezers and a pen that will write on tyvek (water-proof paper).
This is the first in another series that I have envisioned- New York City as an open air Museum. I hope that the idea with catch on (it has already) and that others will add to this series. I hope that you will appreciate the works of art that I bring you to visit- some commissioned and some maybe not so much- but at least you will get another easy gold star to add to your report card.
Lousie Nevelson (1900-1988) was born in Kiev, Russia and came to the USA as a young child. It has been said that she knew from an early age that she wanyed to be an artist. She must have had alot of "stick-to-itness" for she worked a long time without making a sale or achieving public recognition, not attaining either until late in life.
She is best known for her wall-like "assemblages", freguently made of "found objects" and painted in monochrome. This piece, "Night Presence lV", though a monumental work of sculpture and constructed to order by a foundary is a direct outgrowth of this early work.
Here is some trivia;
This piece was orginally located on 5th Ave and 60th Street but was moved to this location. (It seems alot of city art work has legs)
I love the spot that it stands in now- for as you drive (or walk) south on Park Ave and climb up to the crest of Carnegie Hill, you are suddenly confronted with this large work of art. And as the sun crosses the sky during the day, the ever changing angle of light will affect the way this piece will appear by affecting the graphic patterning of light and dark.
Ms Nevelson also had a work installed in 1WTC that was destroyed on 9/11.
