Another favorite memory of Oakwoods is their annual Maple Sugaring program where we observed the process of turning maple sap into the sweet goodness that we spread upon our pancakes. Some years the program even included a breakfast of pancakes and sausage!
From its origins with the Native Americans to present-day production, the art of making maple sap into maple syrup has changed little. It still requires slowly boiling off excess water, to create a sweet, sticky product consisting of approximately 66% sugar! The Oakwoods staff conducts educational programming every March highlighting the past, present, and future of the art of maple sugaring; and discussing why using pure maple syrup truly is living the “sweet life!”
The Cache: The cache is a medium-sized lock & lock hidden along the Long Bark trail at Oakwoods Metropark. See waypoints for parking and trailhead locations. A Metroparks Geocaching permit has been filed with the Southern District Interpretive Services Supervisor and is on file with the park office.
