About 12,500 BP* drainage way referred to as the Ubly Outlet was uncovered in southeast Michigan by the retreating ice margin. This outlet carried water northward from the Erie basin. The resultant lake in the Erie basin was named Glacial Lake Whittlesey. Glacial Lake Whittlesey occupied this area for about 500 years as the ice continued to retreat. When additional drainage outlets opened up the lake became what is now Lake St. Clair, The Detroit River and Lake Erie.
The area is characterized by generally quite flat land with occasional post glacial river cuts, sand bars and eskers.
