If you want a lovely walk on a country lane (0.4 mi), lake and beach view (0.1 mi), and a 0.2 mile hike through the woods on a nice trail – then this cache is for you!
The town of Sherman is very picturesque. There are some nice trails in the woods between the Colonial Park and the town beach, and there are two caches there (see “White, Blue, Red” and “Cow-a-paloozia”) There is a map kiosk both at Colonial Park and at the beach, but the “Green Trail” isn’t on the map! It runs from near the beach roughly southwest over to a point (N41 34.177 W73 29.787) on Cedar Lane. You can begin the cache from there if you like. (If you do – don’t bushwack to Stage 1 – it’s just 40 feet off the Red trail.)
My suggestion however is to begin from Veterans Park on Sawmill Rd. There is open parking at N41 34.636 W73 29.705. Stroll down the lane and past the beach to the trailhead at N41 34.264 W73 29.579. Sherman Town Residents are permitted to park at the beach (pssst – they don’t check) – but it’s a really nice walk from Vet’s Park.
Stage one of the cache is just up from the traihead, at the posted coordinates. You are looking for a 2” x 2” Lock-and-Lock container. Inside are the coordinates of the final. I had some bounce, so I left an explicit clue. (If you began the cache at Cedar Lane – you should really stroll down and check out the beach, its very close)
From Stage 1 proceed up the Red trail to the park bench at the top of the hill. (Note: here you are close to “White, Blue, Red” cache) This is where the White, Blue, and Red trails all come together. Turn left on the Blue trail for ONLY 200 feet or so. When the Blue trail turns right – you go straight onto the GREEN Trail. The cache is off the trail perhaps a couple hundred feet, but the terrain isn’t too bad. Cache is a 2 quart clear screwtop container, well-hidden.
Enjoy the walk! A little bug spray is recommended in the woods.
