Vltava spring
This Earthcache takes you to one of the two springs of the Vltava river (German: Moldau). This spring is located in the Šumava National Park in the southern part of the Czech Republic close to the German border.
From this source onwards the river is called Teplá Vltava (German: Warme Moldau).
The second spring of the river Vltava is found in the Bavarian Forest west of Haidmühle where it is called Kalte Moldau (Czech: Studená Vltava). It crosses the border near Nové Údoli and continues its journey for 56 km where it merges with Teplá Vltava near the city of Volary. From that point on the river is called Vltava only.
The Vltava (German: Moldau) is the longest river in the Czech Republic, running north from its source in Šumava through Ceský Krumlov, Ceské Budejovice, and Prague (Praha), merging with the Elbe (Labe) at Melník. It is 433 km long and drains about 28,090 km²; at their confluence the Vltava actually has more water than the Elbe, but joins the Elbe at a right angle to its flow so that it appears a mere tributary.
The height difference from source to mouth is 1016 m and the average flow is 151m²/s at the mouth. The river is crossed by 18 bridges and runs through Prague over 31 km. Several dams were built on it in the 1950s, the biggest being Lipno Dam in Šumava with its total length of 48 km.
To get the permission to log please answer the following questions:
1. Is Vltava spring a seasonal spring?
2. Looking at the spring - what do you notice every now and then? It has to do with the water. Wait for some minutes. It's not the coins!
3. What do you see behind the spring (piece of art)?
4. Check the information boards at given coordinates (see also picture 'question to answer') - what is the stated height at 'Cerná hora' (black mountain) from where the water comes from? It's not the total height of the mountain.
