Geocache Description:

We are placing a series of 30 caches in honor of my brother, Ziggy606's 30th Bday! In honor of all the good times we have had growing up in and around L.O. We decided to put out a series of caches at many of the places we frequented together or are of significance in his life. Some will have an explanation as to why we placed it there and others will not (however Ziggy will know why).

Well before Mr. Aldridge's Canterbury Village and Always Christmas were here this land used to be the farm owned by the Scripp's family. When the township owned the property they would hold a doughnut festival with carnival each Fall. I can remember us coming here as kids.

Here is a little more of the history behind this land:
It started out with the name Haddril Farm, later purchased by William Edmund Scripps, the son of the founder of the Detroit News and WWJ radio,as a "hobby". The farmland of 3,000 acres was purchased by Scripps in 1916 from several different landowners. The farm delt mainly with angus cattle, cows, swine, sheep, and poultry. During the Depression years (1929-1939), the farmhands and mansion servants all lived on the property as well as the family. A small one-room schoolhouse for children of the farm employees was established in 1925, and in 1952 it was converted into a church.

When William Scripps died in 1952, much of the farm was sold at auction. A large part of the collection of Scripps's European paintings from the estate were donated to the Detroit Institute of Arts in 1956.

The farmland was once owned by the Township but was later bought by Mr. Aldridge (owner of Indianwood Golf course). Some of the remaining farm lands and lakes the Scripps owned are now mainly parks for Orion Township, Oakland County, and the state of Michigan. The original farmhouses and buildings are still part of Canterbury Village to this day.
