Thomasville History Series - The Mitchell House
This geocache is located on the back side of the grand Mitchell House Hotel. The cache is located just off the sidewalk on the right of way. Please do not enter the private parking for the Mitchell House Condominiums. Street Parking is available on Madison Street. From Madison street, the hotel can be seen as it was in its prime- constructed of exposed brick. While Thomasville was home to several famous resorts and hotels during the time, the Mitchell House is the only one still standing.
During the late 1800s the Mitchell House provided luxurious lodging to famous Northerners such as the Goodrich and Vanderbilt families. The hotel extends from Jackson to Jefferson Streets and was the scene of lavish parties and dances. While most of Thomasville’s grand hotels have faded into history, the Mitchell House stills stands as upscale condominiums overlooking Downtown Thomasville. Inside the Mitchell House, much of the original hotel remains, including the interior brick walls, staircases and hardwood floors. In the early 1900s the Mitchell House was home to Neel’s Department Store, home to Thomasville’s first Rose Show in 1922.
