Sam Merrill Trail; Echo Mountain area. 2.9 miles one way. 1400' elevation gain. Trail well maintained but can be difficult in afternoon heat.
Part of the "White City" as it was known, this site once housed a 13-inch telescope and the world's most powerful search light. The observatory was the last structure to be destroyed, which happend in 1928. Most of the rest of the city was destroyed in by a series of fires and windstorms in 1900 and 1905.
