Here's a quintessential Anchorage cache - dangle from a rope in full view of passing motorists while searching for the hidden treasure... rrriiight! It's great fun and very safe if done in good company. Cache owner mtboy is serious about taking cachers out to the site with gear and assisting a safe hunt, so 'screw up' your courage and head out to a new adventure! It's not as easy to access as most on this list, but it's one of the most unique! 

acacherophobia

One of the very best view caches in the city - from a higher perspective, and a drive-up as well. Visit the very fringe of the wilderness found in Chugach State Park while looking at the city of Anchorage laid out at your feet. It's only a few dozen feet from the car on an excellent trail. A definite don't-miss if you've got access to a car. A visit to this location will whet your appetite for a walk on the Hillside's excellent trail systems!

Alpen, er, Alpine View

Downtown Anchorage near the Performing Arts Center. This is 'ground zero' for an excellent public art series designed and implemented by a talented young Alaskan. A crafty micro hide...

A must-do Anchorage cache... who can resist this much chocolate? Easy, with many 'options' and open late too.

Chocolate Waterfall

Great paved trail, great view, and great books (Bookcrossing.com exchange cache)... what other excuse do you need to hike the Coastal Trail tonight? Access is best from the overlook parking at the end of West Northern Lights Blvd, by the north end of the airport.

Coastal Trail Book Exchange

Coastal Trail - A must-visit location, easily accessed along downtown Anchorage's western shoreline. Dead-on coordinates and an excellent description page help this crafty well-hidden cache come to light.

Coastal Trail Memorial Series: #1. Hannah Cove

Coastal Trail - This is well-worth the little bit of calculations necessary to find the final hide point. A Westchester Lagoon cache, in one of Anchorage's premier year-round parks. The final hide is in a stunning location!

Coastal Trail Memorial Series: #2. The Iron Worker

One of the five best view caches in Anchorage! This is one of the city's first caches ever placed. Follow the winding big ski trails at Kincaid Park until you get close, then look for a game trail to lead you closer... (T2.5)

Cook's Nook

Another terrific Coastal Trail cache! Stupendous views to the north and west of Anchorage, with best access from the overlook parking area at the end of West Northern Lights Blvd by the north side of the airport...

Doggie Cache

Coastal Trail - Damage from the 1964 earthquake is beyond comprehension, and still visible. The earth rolled under homes here for more than three minutes, and finally spewed them into the inlet. Learn from the nearby exhibit, then enter the now-overgrown devastation zone to search out the cache. (T2.5) 

EARTHQUAKE !!!

Alaska has some wierd structures along its roadways - and cachers who make good use of them! Don't try to access this one from the freeway... just like the moose, cachers have to find another way!

Another Conners Lake Park cache... easy find, but you 'must like dogs.' (T2)

Grandmas Toy Box

One of those tricky 'how did this happen' caches... in the midst of Kincaid Park on Anchorage's west side. (T2) Moose are common, and I saw a black bear on the trail here in late March! Not as easy as it looks...

Herbie's Cousin

Weird to say, but you'll like this cache... eventually. A modest micro done very very well in downtown Anchorage - one of the city's originals. On a clear day the view north to Denali is one of the city's best...

It's a Jungle out there!

A not-to-be-missed garden in lovely Kincaid Park, along the south side of Anchorage International Airport.  Arguably one of the top ten floral displays in this 'City of Flowers' - it's a great place to begin a journey collection caches along the park's south bluff overlooking Cook Inlet and Turnagain Arm.

Lekisch Memorial Garden

Located on the east end of the relatively new Ship Creek Trail in a place where no one seems to be walking! This is within moderate walking distance of downtown hotels. There's now a string of microcaches placed along this paved walking trail.

MicroShip2

Well-done night cache off Campbell Airstrip Rd on Anchorage's east side. Exercise caution - this is entirely within wild animal habitat - and moose move around at night...

Mission: Impossible

A 50% off-trail hike along Campbell Airstrip Rd in east Anchorage. Definitely wildlands - so watch out for all the four-footed creatures about (including canines in the off-leash dog park portion)! Grab a trail map off the link at geocachealaska.org - Alaska's local geocacher resource site! (T2)

Mushroom Forest

Another hike in the wilds of a horse park. (T2.5) NOT in downtown Anchorage - located nearer to the zoo!

O'Malley by the Green

It's eerie to comb the woods in the dark night, knowing moose are lurking everywhere - as well as those oh-so-friendly dogs at Conners Lake Park. A very well-done night cache that demands sharp eyes from the outset.

Operation Blue Moon

These are my personal favorites in the Anchorage 'bowl' - from Muldoon Rd (north) to Potter Marsh (south). The emphasis is on easy accessibility for visitors (usually half an hour or less), which excludes most hikes to Chugach State Park caches on the mountains along the city's east side. There's many other fine caches out there - these just tickled my fancy! (Last edit date: July 2009; Check listing before visiting any cache shown!)

Groundspeak defines a terrain rating of '1' as 'wheelchair accessible.' A T-rating based on my own perception is added where different from the original listing.
