Located in an Open Space Park about 400 ft off the trail
This cache is located on the Star K Ranch, once home to a beer-drinking, cigarette-loving sheep named Oscar and his eccentric owner, the old Star K Ranch today is in the center of one of the metro area's open space treasures.
The Star K ranch was acquired by city of Aurora in the 1990’s and is still mostly in its natural state, the open space offers meadows interspersed with stands of cottonwoods. Sand Creek, a recently designated greenway, flows in a deep gulch south of the walk area. A 5-mile-long trail along Sand Creek from Star K Ranch west to Sand Creek Park at Havana Street and Twenty-sixth Avenue
The old ranch house of Virgil "Pop" Stark, who held gambling and drinking parties there during the 1940s and 50s, has been remodeled into the Morrison Nature Center.
The nature center is surrounded by 200 acres of century-old cottonwood trees, willows, native grasses and a wetland preserve.
The site is surrounded by urban development. Yet it is home to wild deer, foxes, coyotes, rabbits and a multitude of bird and waterfowl species.
The nature center also provides access to the 14-mile Sand Creek Greenway Trail connecting the High Line Canal Trail in Aurora to the Platte River Trail in Commerce City.
