Ord Hill is an attractive wooded hill that lies just north of
Inverness across the Kessock Bridge. At the top of the hill is
a vitrified Iron Age Fort, particularly interesting because of its
size and because of the views it commands across the Moray Firth to
Inverness and the Grampian Hills beyond. You may have to hunt
around for an opening between the trees for a really good view.
Wildlife to be seen in Ord Wood:
Mammals: In these pinewoods you may have the opportunity
to spot the Pine Marten. Ordhill is one of the few woods in Britain
where you may spot a Bottlenose Dolphin in the Moray Firth. We have
information about Red squirrel and Roe deer
Birds: The Black Isle gives the observer a great
opportunity to watch the Red Kite. This area is also very good for
the Common Buzzard. Within the forest look out for Crested Tits and
Crossbills. We have information about Red kite and Osprey
Habitats: A rich coniferous habitat consisting of
Cowberry, Blaeberry, Heather, Juniper and creeping Ladies
Tresses.
