The Goose, The Chick and The Seals Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Scooby Doo and Shaggy Too: Sadly, after speaking to the National Trust, it seems it is best to archive this cache now. Although it was felt that the cache was not a contributing factor (as it wasn't over visited), the increase in general of visitors to this coastline has meant that the wildlife has to be protected. We didn't want to add any more footfall at all with the cache so have now removed it.

Geocache Description:

The cache is within easy reach of the South West Coast Path, between Porth Joke (Polly Joke) and Holywell Bay. It can be approached along the coast from the National Trust car park at Polly Joke with a walk of approx one mile. See additional waypoints for other parking options. The walk to the cache is relatively easy but the last few metres involve a bit of scrambling so extreme care is needed and all children should be closely supervised.

DUE TO A FEW LOGS I AM GOING TO REITERATE THAT THERE IS A SCRAMBLE DOWN TO THE CACHE THAT NEEDS CARE. WE'VE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM BUT WE ARE OBVIOUSLY MOUNTAIN GOATS WITH 'FOUR WHEEL DRIVE DOGS' AND NO CHILDREN!

From the cache site, to the right you can see The Goose. This is the large rock out to sea from Crantock Beach. The island immediately infront is The Chick, which is not only a popular nesting place for many species of seabirds but is also home to a seal colony. Look down at the rocks inbetween The Chick and the mainland and you are very likely to see a few seals bobbing around or lazing on the rocks. They also love messing around in the surf around Polly Joke so you may have spotted some on the walk to the cache.

UPDATE - SUMMER 2016 - ALSO SEEN IN THIS AREA ARE CHOUGHS (visit link) THEY ARE CLASSIFIED AS ENDANGERED BIRDS AND THERE ARE ONLY 54 CURRENTLY KNOWN TO BE IN CORNWALL. YOU CAN IDENTIFY THESE JACKDAW SIZED BLACK BIRDS BY THEIR ORANGE/RED LEGS AND BILLS. THEY ARE ALSO GREAT ACROBATS IN THE SKY! WE RECENTLY SPOTTED 6 IN THE CACHE AREA. IF YOU SEE ANY IT WOULD BE GREAT IF YOU COULD LOG THAT AT THE SAME TIME WITH NUMBERS, DATES AND TIMES. THANK YOU!

You can also approach the cache from across Cubert Common where there is free parking or from the National Trust paying car park at Holywell Bay. See additional waypoints for details on these.

The cache is a small tupperware container suitable for small items only. We've put a few items in there to get going and also a few of my local landscape photos as a memory of your visit.

We hope you enjoy the views, the fresh salty air and have seen some seals (we always see at least one every time we visit!). If you have, please let us know how many you saw and log it in the book.
