Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden atop of Sibbald Viewpoint which is off HWY#68 (Sibbald Creek Trail) near Kananaskis country. The route is a very short walk from the parking lot, past a picnic area, just off a trail that leads downhill towards Sibbald Flat, where buffalo once grazed. The cache is a toothbrush container that is covered in camo tape, and should be a relatively easy find. Due to its size, it has room for only a pencil and logbook.

This is the second cache in the "GET OUT" series with a goal of getting people out into the mountains to enjoy the scenery, fresh air, exercise, and spend time with friends and family.

Sibbald Flat used to be called Sibbald Park because it is very often snow free in winter months and has in the past attracted elk and buffalo in great numbers. This historic migration of animals attracted hunters ranging in time from prehistoric ancestors of the Indians to the Stonies of the late 19th century. Now adays you are far more likely to see cattle!

The area is named after Frank Sibbald who grew up with the Stonies at Morleyville. They called him Tokun (the fox), in recognition of his hunting skills. Frank Sibbald was a guide and packer for the CPR survey as well as a rancher and homesteader in the Jumping Pound Creek Area.

Sibbald Viewpoint is also a good starting point for an easy walk along Sibbald Forestry Exhibit Trail. This walk is featured on page 282 of Gillean Daffern’s, "Canmore & Kananaskis Country - Short Walks for Inquiring Minds #1". The trail starts accorss the highway, heading towards Sibbald Lake Campground. The trail then crosses forestry plantations and interpretive exhibits before entering the forest trail that runs along Bateman Creek. The trail ends at the picnic area at Sibbald Lake. Total return distance is 4.2KM (or simply drive to the lake after visiting the cache!).

GET OUT and enjoy!
