Fall Into Geocaching: Mississinewa Reservoir:
"Water On A Slope!"

This cache was created by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of State Parks and Reservoirs to promote geocaching in the Indiana State Parks and Reservoirs in the fall of 2006. There are a total of 22 different caches located in 22 different state parks, recreation areas, or reservoirs.


Whether you visit our great State Parks and Reservoirs for a day or an entire weekend, we hope you get out and see all that Indiana has to offer. Be sure to also check out some of the geocaching events going on at various State Parks! Good Luck!!!

Welcome to Mississinewa Reservoir! Through the ages, the rushing waters of what is now known as the “Mississinewa” (Miami Indian name Mischis-in-wah... water on a slope) washed away the soft limestone of the riverbank creating a number of pillar-like formations known as “Cliffs of the Seven Pillars.” This wonder of nature may be viewed from the riverbank downstream of the reservoir.

It is the manmade wonder at the end of the lake that nearly as amazing. Mississinewa Lake was designed and built by the Louisville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The lake operates as a unit with J. Edward Roush and Salamonie Lakes to reduce flood stages in the Upper Wabash Basin and with other lakes downstream in reduction of Lower Wabash and Ohio River floods.

Here's some facts for you! The Mississinewa is an earth fill dam, which at its construction in 1962 through 1967, had cost 23 million dollars! But, when you consider that it has saved 166 million dollars in possible flood damage, it was well worth it! The dam is 8,000 feet long, and at flood stage, holds back a lake that is 31 miles long!

Today, much recreation comes from the reservoir. Picnicing, camping, fishing, swimming, and hiking are popular activities. Join the Mississinewa masses by making geocaching one of the activities! Be sure to check out the dam during your stay! Enjoy!
