Geocache Description:

A drive/walk by – although there is a small dedicated picnic area and a ‘Hide’ to observe the wild life there is no public access, apart from the Hadrian's Wall Heritage Trail running along the southern edge of this lake – unless you’re fishing of course!

Straddling the Military Road at Whittle Dene are seven small lakes. The most northerly one ‘The Great Northern Lake’ is a designated nature reserve. The reservoirs were constructed in the period 1848 to 1857 and, since that time, have been central to the water supply for Newcastle and its surrounding areas. Currently they supply drinking water to 600,000 consumers. In winter Whittle Dene usually has a flock of Whooper Swans and wild geese including Grey-lag, Pink-feet and Barnacle in the fields nearby and Wigeon, Goosander, Goldeneye and sometimes Smew on the lakes. In spring Great-crested Grebe nests and Common Tern, wagtails, pipits and swallows and martins can be seen around the lagoons.
