Lough Shannagh is a tarn or mountain lake located at a height of 390 meters in the heart of the Mourne Mountains. Geocaches are also hidden on Slieve Muck and Doan and are close enough to also be considered for a day’s geocaching.
There are two main routes into Lough Shannagh, both of which cross the famous Mourne Wall at some point. The shortest route is from Ott Car Park (N54.11.032 W006.02.392). Follow the track up to the stile that crosses the Mourne Wall between Carn Mountain and Slieve Loughshannagh. Cross the stile, take the track that leads down into the valley and Lough Shannagh will appear directly in front of you. Be warned - the track is steep, rough in places and marshy at the bottom, particularly in the winter. Be aware also that it will seem even steeper on the return journey.
A much easier but longer route is via the Banns Road. This track begins at a small car park next to an Equestrian Centre on the east side of the B27 and near to Crocknafeola Wood. The Banns Road is an old drover’s track and, although rough in places, does not pose any real difficulty. The distance to the lake is about 4.5 km. You will cross the Mourne Wall as it makes its way up Slieve Muck and views of the Silent Valley Reservoir will appear to the right. The track ends at a small sandy beach - a great place for a picnic.
The cache itself is hidden just off the track that circles the lake. It is on the Carn Mountain / Slieve Muck side of the Lough.
The cache is placed in a square plastic tab lock container 15cm x 15cm x 9cm.
