UMass Tour #3 - "1st and 10" Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Western Mass Clan: This cache's end came a bit early. Stopped by today and the cache was indeed missing. Since I had planned to archive this one anyway at the end of the semester, I will not be replacing it. A good run for this cache. Thank you to all who came looking for it.

Geocache Description:

Third in a series of UMass Tour caches by the Western Mass Clan. The "Dad" of the clan is a UMass Industrial Engineering Graduate Student seeking to complete his doctorate. In honor of UMass Football, this cache has been placed near the UMass McGuirk Alumni Football Stadium

UMass Football and the UMass Marching Band are the Autumn centerpieces of this area. Several weekends each fall, the tailgaters decend upon the parking lots and fields adjacent to McGuirk in anticipation of a good game. The UMass Minutemen football team won the National Championship for their NCAA Division in 1999.

This cache is located in a wooded area near the stadium. There is a mown path through the woods, making this a family-friendly cache. The container is a 6"x6"x2.5" Lock-n-Lock. The hiding place is approximately 5 to 6 feet from the mown path on the North side of the path. No need to go deep into the trees. Since this area receives high foot traffic on game days and for special events, the container contains some glued-on camouflage to blend in with its environment. This is to increase its survivability 'in the wild' on these high-traffic occasions.

The Original Cache Contents of this hide are mostly kid-oriented: markers, highlighters, 2 craft packs, and a log book. Please try to trade even, trade up, or don't trade to make sure the kids have nice things to find.

FIRST TO FIND: Congratulations to mathteacher30 and DanceMan for earning the Co-FTF on this cache and the felt pennant.

PARKING: Parking is the only real tricky part to this cache. In the summer, parking nearby is not a problem. It is mostly unenforced. However, during the school year parking is strictly enforced - and frequently so. Your options? You can take a PVTA bus in from downtown Amherst, park in one of the shops near Rafters and walk to the stadium, or park near the UMass Sun Wheel which is free (I think). I have included coordinates for parking near the UMass Sun Wheel which is about a 5 minute walk from the stadium. If you choose to park in the nearby student lot during a normal work day while school is in session, you may return to find a parking ticket, or worse, a towed car. However, parking on campus is usually OK on weekends and after 5pm anytime of the year. Just read the nearby signs to be sure.
