A VIRTUAL cache now. This started out as a small cache with a log and a few trade items in the community of Salvo on the Outer Banks. The owner of the building was worried about people in his bushes and so, it is now a virtual cache. Please be respectful of this property.
The following is reprinted from the Third Edition of the book "North Carolina Curiosities", originally by Jerry Bledsoe, updated by Sara Pitzer:
SALVO - The Second Smallest Post Office in America
"The Salvo Post Office on NC 12 attracts a lot of attention. A frame building 8 feet by 12, it was built stortly after the turn of the century and has been in continuous service since. It contains boxes for ninety-four patrons and sitting room for postmaster Edward Hooper, a Salvo native born in 1922.
Many travelers think it must be the smallest post office in America and stop to find out if it is. It isn't.
The post office in Ochopee, Florida, in the Everglades is only 7 feet by 8, leaving Salvo second in smallness. That doesn't keep people from taking snapshots of it, though. 'I have my picturemade so much I feel like a model,' says Hooper."
Outer banks cacher OBXlocal04 has kindly agreed to help me with this cache should there be any problems.
Now the virtual part: In order to get credit for this cache, you MUST email me with the following information:
1) What year was the post office decommissioned? (on the red sign above the front door)
2) What street is across the road?
3) What are the numbers on the green and white sign in front of the fire hydrant?
All three of these can be successfully answered without leaving your vehicle. Thanks for coming by!!
