Geocache Description:

Welcome to our “Cow Gap” cache. You are looking for a small clip-lid container. This can be seen in the picture.

The walk from the suggested parking is about a 3km round trip.

Cow Gap is a beautiful and unique place around the coast of Eastbourne. At one time it was used by smugglers as there is a path that leads right from the coastline to the top of the seafront road, King Edward’s Parade. This would have made transporting contraband very easy.

Just further up the coast and also a smugglers paradise is Birling Gap. This place is well worth a visit too.

Cow Gap is also one of the places that could have been home to Sherlock Holmes Holiday Cottage. The scenery is mentioned many times in the books and this area fits perfectly.

Whilst walking to the cache, if you have parked at the suggested parking, you will pass the St Bede’s sports pitch.

This itself is a fantastic location and is used for Cricket, Football, Track events and Quidditch.

Yes you heard right.
In “Harry Potter and the Goblet of fire” This sports ground was used as the backdrop to the Stadium in which the Quidditch World Cup Final between Ireland and Bulgaria took place. The Ministry of Magic spent a year magically constructing a huge stadium for the Quidditch World Cup in August 1994.
The First Quidditch world cup was held in 1473 and every four years after.
However, in HP:GoF, Ludo Bagman welcomes everyone to the 422nd World cup. But those of you quick off the draw with Math can tell that there could only have been around 130 World cups since 1473, and those even sharper will notice that 1994 could not have been a World cup year. The world cup years would have been 1993 then 1997.

Some people have too much time on their hands.

The geology at Cow Gap is extremely interesting as the chalk cliffs are resting on a layer of Gault Clay. This clay acts as a lubricant and allows the face of the cliff to “Slide” down into the shore, creating the shallow rise from the shore to the cliff face, rather than “Fall” away. Again, it was this effect that was attractive to smugglers. After fresh “Falls” many fossils can be found.

There is a fantastic website here that contains a lot of info on the fossils that can be found at Cow Gap.

The Contents on the cache at Go Live are:
Log Book,
4 Finders Certificates,
4 x AA Rechargeable Batteries, (for all you heavy battery users)
256M Flash Drive,
Two Packs of Mint X-Men cards.
Fake Nail Kit,
4 Coloured Pencils,
3 Racing Beans,
A Mini Water Pistol.
I think it is a lovely place for a picnic, as do others. We found the remains of a camp fire close to the cache so the area is well used. Let’s hope the cache does not get muggled. Please DO NOT start a fire. It is against the law to start a fire there.

From the area of the camp fire there is a lovely view of Eastbourne. You can see Pevensey Bay, Bexhill, Hastings and on a good day, Dungeness.

Take gloves and wear long sleeves.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy this cache. The_Dravens
