I have always known this area as Squaw Rock, however, while
plotting the coords on some of the mapping sites to set up this
multi I see it is also identified as Chapel Rock. This rustic park
marks the spot where Myles Standish landed in 1621, with Squanto,
the Patuxet Indian who helped the Pilgrims at Plymouth Colony to
survive in their first difficult years. It was the site of the Fire
Control Base for all the NIKE sites protecting Boston during the
cold war and is now the home of the Robert I. Nickerson American
Legion Post 382.
Great views include Thompson's and Long Island, Columbia Point,
South Boston and the Boston city skyline. The park also offers a
look at some 570 million year old puddingstone, which some
researchers estimate was deposited during the ice age at the end of
the Proterozoic era. These ancient sedimentary rocks can be found
along the parks small beaches and you will get a very good look at
a large out-cropping of it at the northern point.
I rated this a 3 1/2 difficulty in regard to stage two, stay on
the well defined trails as you make your way and I would advise
that this is NOT a small child friendly place. This is a very
popular, and rich, fishing location so expect to see plenty of
muggles casting a hook in season. Stages are film cans and the
final is a 2qt. L&L. Please do your best when re-hiding all
stages and the final to ensure the cache's longevity.
P.S. If you like to hunt benchmarks you should be able to score
four more.
