True story...
Back in the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s, NineSix started taking us
with him on his “surfing safaris” into Mexico in search of that
elusive “secret spot”. We used to make our buddy Mark “Squeeky”
Briggs ride shotgun with NineSix while the rest of us slept in the
back of NineSix's '48 Ford Woody on those long trips. Mark didn’t
mind as he idolized NineSix. Don’t ask how “Squeeky” got his
nick-name... that’s a whole other story. NineSix being the
“oldest”, took it upon himself to give ALL of us nick-names...
usually based on some "bone-head" thing we had done or said.
Anyway, the story goes that as the sun was coming up one morning,
Squeeky spotted a dirt road off of the main highway leading down to
the ocean, so he said “Hey Mister Six, how about we see what’s down
that road.” NineSix was skeptical, but agreed to check it out,
“This better be good Squeeky, or I’m going to leave you here and
make you walk home.” As we approached the beach, we could see a
great left point break with perfect, glassy, 3 to 4 foot waves
peeling around the point and the best part was there was no one
there but us. We had finally found OUR “secret spot”.
Well, because it was Mark’s discovery, he got the
honor of naming the place. “I’m going to call this 'Briggs Point'",
he proclaimed. We all agreed, but because we never called Mark by
his "real" name, to us, from that day on, that special surfing spot
became known as “Squeeky’s”. Mark always hated us for that.
Now you know the story of how “Briggs Point” got its "real"
name.
Well, this little corner green area in San Dimas has nothing to do
with surfing or Mexico, but it is named "Briggs Point". We pass by
here all the time and whenever we see that sign, we can’t help but
smile and remember all of the good times we had surfing at
“Squeeky’s”... oops, sorry Mark... “Briggs Point”.
