Geocache Description:

A short steep climb rewarded with stunning views.

Saline parish is on the western boundary of the county of Fife. The parish name is apparently Gaelic, thought to be a contraction of Salvin or Salbin. Sal or sel is either Gaelic for great or Saxon for great or good. Bhean or bean pronounced vin or bin which is Gaelic for hill or mountain. Hence Salin or Salvin signifies 'great hill'. This is most likely a reference to Saline Hill, at the bottom of which the village lies.

The lower part of Saline Hill is known as Kill-erny. Kill and Cell are synonymous terms hence Kill-erny literally means the 'cell of Erny' and Saline hill would naturally gain the name Cell-vin or 'the hill where the cell was'.
In the 18th century, it was a former weaving village, and still contains many interesting 18th century cottages. In the 1860s the district was chiefly pastoral. There was much coal, limestone and ironstone and the chief employment was mining, and agriculture. During the 19th and 20th centuries mining became the primary industry of the region.

Today from the heights of Salty Lump you can view Ben Lomond in the far west against a backdrop of Stirling and the pencil streak of the National Wallace Monument. To the North lie the Ochil Hills and to the South you can follow the course of the Forth from Stirling out past the bridges and Edinburgh to the sea.

The cache is located near the top of the hill to the North East of Saline village. The cache is a one litre lock and lock type box. There is a small area that can be used for parking one car at NT 04620 92410. Please do not obstruct the gate. Climb over the gate and head up the track. This is the easiest access route to the hill. Walking boots recommended. Please take care during lambing season to avoid the sheep (April and May).
