“See the waterfalls” exhorted TE Brown…. and
that’s what these “Waterfall” caches are all
about - being observant and seeing the waterfalls.
Spooyt Vane waterfall, literally the "White Spout", is on the
edge of Glen Mooar in the west of the Island and south of Kirk
Michael. "Spooyt", the jet issuing from a rock-face naturally or
through some form of aqueduct, is a word applied equally to
torrents of all sizes up to waterfalls of considerable volume.
Spooyt Vane is near the eastern entrance to the glen and
although not actually in the glen, the waterfall is easily
viewed from it. In the centre
of the glen are the remains of an 8th-10th century Keeil "Cabbal
Pherick" (St Patrick's Chapel). The ruins consist of the Keeil,
burial ground and priest's cell. Stone crosses found at the site
are now in Kirk Michael Parish Church.
The Raad Ny Foillan runs by the western end of the glen on what
is left of the old railway line which operated from 1879 to 1968;
the remains of huge stone
pillars which supported the
iron railway viaduct that spanned the valley are near to this
entrance to the glen.
The listed coordinates are not of the actual cache location but
simply a reference point and the real challenge of this cache is to
determine the coordinates before you set out. All information to do
that is provided here and no further hints will be provided. If you
don’t solve the puzzle first then it may be possible to find
the cache by a diligent search of the area but you should expect
that to take some considerable time and effort.
Somewhere in the glen between the waterfalls and the Raad ny Foillan is a cache,
the initial contents of which include:
FTF wooden (toy) train whistle
pen, pencil, pencil sharpener, Matchbox toy,
"pink ribbon" quarter, "bugs" (fly, butterfly,..),
backpack badge, small spinning top, cobra and other
items.
