Geocache Description:

Cache is a small camo tupperware. Small trade goods OK.

This cache is one of a series called "The trail of the serpent" based loosely on a book of the same title written in 1973 by Robert E. Gard and Elaine Reetz. All of these caches will be located along the Fox river from it's source south of Kingston to the mouth of the Fox River in Green Bay. As the infant Fox runs northeast from the Portage, it glides and twists through fertile meadows, broadens into small lakes until it finds itself in the broad sweep of Lake Winnebago. Lake Winnebago acts as the dam for the lower Fox which continues on to Green Bay in a wide flood, tumbling over chutes now made into dams, becoming one big scene of power development for the growth of its towns. "For us," said a famous Indian, "This river was a path. For our white brethren, to whom we sold it, it is a power." Loise Phelps Kellogg What is now Buffalo lake was a huge marsh of reeds and wild rice that almost required a guide to get through. When the Montello dam and lock was installed it became the large, shallow lake that it is today. The lake got it's name when the last buffalo to be seen in the area was chased into the lake and drowned. Montello is a neat town that was known for the hardest granite in the world. It was made into monuments and street pavers. The Montello mill pond is a seperate lake that eventually drains into the Fox river. For extra credit try to figure out how the mill pond gets through town and into the Fox. There are some other caches in this area, enjoy! You can not drive to the cache. Park at N43 47.183 W89 19.603 and enjoy the .2mi walk along Lakeshore Drive which is closed to vehicle traffic. The road will be rebuilt sometime in the future. It was used for a detour during the 2008 flood and was damaged.
