Geocache Description:

This is a replacement cache for the original Keeping it Green cache which was located in a very busy area overrun with Muggles and nosey neighbors.  The new location is in a much less busy area with fewer neighbors but it is still visible in both of the photos below.  It's still a bit busy during morning and evening rush hours so early morning and evening searches are recommended.  Parking could be a bit of a challenge but this is a very quick park-&-grab so you should have little trouble.

Urban sprawl is slowly destroying our open spaces all over the United States.  What once were pastoral farmlands, pristine forests, and open prairies are slowly and inexorably being turned into highways, shopping malls, cineplexes, factories, and tract housing.  While the march of progress must go on, there are few among us who do not realize that development must be undertaken carefully and sanely if we don't want to destroy our quality of life.

Fortunately, there are a number of dedicated individuals and organizations out there that appreciate this and are working hard to preserve some of our open spaces in their natural state.  These include the Rhode Island Greenways Council, The Aquidneck Island Land Trust, and the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission.  They accomplish their goals by assisting communities in formulating comprehensive development plans, encouraging owners of open areas to surrender their development rights, establishing development covenants and the outright purchase of development rights and open lands using funds obtained from individual donations as well as public and private grants.

The photographs below show a view of one of the success stories in this effort.  The photo on the left was taken some time in the late 19th century.  The photo on the right shows the same area in 2006.  While much has changed in these photos, it is encouraging to see that what was farmland in the 1800s is still farmland in the 21st century.

This cache is dedicated to those who strive to “Keep it Green.”  Searchers should bring their own pencils.
