Geocache Description:

Great Track For you and your family, It will take les than 1hour.

This Place has got a carving that allot of people do not even know is there. It is around the corner from the famous Maori rock carvings at Mine Bay.

You can get there by Boat as well. There is a ramp close by, Do not try to land near the Rocks!

John Randall and Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell created this and the carvings at Mine Bay in the late 1970's. They may look a 1000 years old and a product of an earlier culture, but they were a gift to the people of the Taupo region.

Master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell carved Ngatoroirangi, his first ever rock carving, onto the cliff face at the southern end of Mine Bay, Lake Taupo. He is well known for his wakas - including Te Aio o Nukutaimemeha, named after Maui's waka and was the inspiration for the waka in 'Whale Rider' - the movie. This waka - half the length of a rugby field (45 metres and weighing 30 Tonnes) - was the subject of some controversy with its owners - the Ngati Porou. However the waka was part of the Hikurangi Maunga
Dawn Programme, welcoming in the new millennium.

His name, Matahi, was bestowed upon him by the Tahitians in honour of his work in building and sailing the Hawaiiki Nui canoe from Tahiti to Hicks Bay, New Zealand using traditional navigation in 1985. An offshoot of this is the Waka Ama programme. See www.wakaama.co.nz and www.tatouwhare.org.nz.
