The Trestle Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

MarcusArelius: The container was reported missing yesterday and ss I drove past today I saw Well_Jointed searching. We found the logbook but that was about all. The hide is not muggle proof enough so I think I will let this one go.

Geocache Description:

This simple two-stage cache involves a short walk in the historic Wilburton area of Bellevue. Go to the listed coordinates to obtain the information needed to locate the final.

The Wilburton trestle is the longest wooden trestle, and the highest timber structure, in the Northwest. Built in 1904 by the Northern Pacific Railroad, it is 102 feet high and 975 feet long. It used to span the headwaters of the Mercer Slough but in 1916 the construction of the Ballard locks lowered the level of Lake Washington by 9 feet. This caused the Mercer Slough to retreat leaving just the boggy wetlands, and Kelsey creek, under the trestle today.

Before the trestle was built Manley Wilber and England had established a logging camp nearby and built a mill that Wade Hewitt and Charles Lea took over in 1903. Unfortunately, since easy transportation was disrupted the mill was forced to close in 1918. The company sued King County successfully for $125,000.

The Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Railroad owns the trestle today and uses it for regular freight service on weekday mornings. King County is currently negotiating the purchase of this rail spur.

Sewer pipes parallel the trestle and carry waste to the Metro plant in Renton. The exposed sections crossing the creek are the bottom of a very large inverted, gravity-fed, siphon.

The year did the mill closed = ABCD
The lot the slough ended in = EF
The type of vessel navigated the slough in the narrative = G
If it was canoes G=7, if it was steamships G=8, if it was barges G=9, if it was sailing vessels G=6.

Hunt this cache in October when the salmon are migrating up Kelsey creek for an extra bonus.
