Geocache Description:

Stroll along the Clearwater River.

Accessible by land, water or oversnow through State lands. Informal trail is not marked, but easy to find. OK for mountain bikes. Another quieter place in the quiet valley. If traveling by water, check out the rock garden above Elbow Lake before floating from Salmon Lake. Or play like Lewis and Clark and paddle upstream. Nice terrain for cross-country skiing. During winter, try not to distress the game (travel at an angle from them, not directly towards). Area homesteaded at the turn of the 20th century; old irrigation ditch still visible. Native Americans dug roots in the area. The 35 foot tall, large ponderosa pine snag directly between the cache and the river could have been scarred 200 years ago for cambium. Fire scars on nearby trees remind us that fire is nothing new to the area. I've seen no nasty snakes nearby, but its always a good idea to be careful where you sit or place your hands. Although you can hike in from the north (its a little shorter), the southern access is personally more attractive and enjoyable. Southern access is on about 300 acres of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks prairie land where non-motorized use is welcome. If coming from the north you'll cross Montana Department of Natural Resouces and Conservation land where a $10 recreation use license is required unless you are fishing or hunting properly licensed.
