Geocache Description:

This is the last in a series of caches. The co-ordinates given are for the pub car park only. You will have to use the numbers given from each of the seven other caches to work out the co-ordinates of this cache.

This is a series of 8 pubs throughout the Wirral. The eight pubs are

THE DEE VIEW

THE THATCH

THE WHEATSHEAF NESS

THE SEVEN STARS

THE FOX AND HOUNDS

THE FARMERS ARMS

THE MAGS & PILOT

THE FERRY & THE TAP (BONUS CACHE)

There is no need to enter the pub as all clues are outside, so this series is suitable for families with children.

Wirral has so many lovely pubs from quiet relaxing pubs, child friendly pubs and also pubs with great entertainment. Best of all we have lots of “Real Ale” pubs. This series, we hope will hi-light some of our fantastic pubs. There is a FTF in every cache and a Trophy in the final cache. Please don’t take the trophy unless you have done all the pubs and signed the logbooks.

The Eastham Ferry was built by Thomas Stanley in 1846. Along with the pleasure gardens, the hotel attracted visitors from far and wide. To the rear of the Hotel stood a large ballroom that held regular dances. An elegant Victorian glass veranda on the front symbolized the grandeur of the era. We can remember that veranda. What a shame it couldn’t be restored. Opposite the Hotel is the remains of a ferry landing stage that was built in 1878. The last regular service ran from here in 1929. The small sandstone building opposite the Ferry & Tap was the ticket office where visitors could buy tickets for the paddle steamers “Ruby”, “Pearl” and Sapphire”. We have enjoyed many happy times in the Ferry. Children were always welcome inside and out. There is a large garden with a playground for children. The Hotel has recently changed hands and Hugh & Pam have moved on after many years as licensee's. The Hotel has had a tasteful facelift and it now offers 2 for 1 meals which are highly recommended. Meals are only served up to 8:00pm. Around the bar is an amazing tiled floor, worth seeing, which we think is original. There are lots of lovely features to this pub.

In 1894 the Manchester ship canal was opened by Queen Victoria and a jubilee arch was built in the pleasure gardens to commemorate her diamond jubilee. Sadly the iron pier and the arch were dismantled in the 30’s. If you wish to know more about the pleasure gardens then see the Bear Pit by AC-p. At high tide you can see the tankers, tugs and large ships passing very close by. It is marked by red and green buoys This canal was built to connect the Port of Liverpool to Manchester. Just past the Pier bar there is a visitor centre and a bar-b-q area.

The Pier Bar now called The Tap was once stables. It is now what we would call a beer drinker’s pub, popular with bikers in the summer months. On Sundays you can see them doing their wheelies and tricks outside which is really entertaining. They serve cask and real ales and is a very nice pub inside.

You could spend a whole day here in the summer, roaming through the park, going to the visitor centre and having a lovely bar-b-q and lastly, finishing it all off with a pint at one of the two pubs.
