Se trata de un enorme y antiquísimo ejemplar de castaño que se
encuentra ubicado en la zona llamada del Hoyo del Bote, en la
Sierra Real de Istán. Se accede por un carril terrizo. / It
concerns an enormous and very ancient exemplary of a chestnut tree
that is located in an area called Hoya del Bote, in the Sierra Real
van Istán. It can be reached by a dirt road.

Es probablemente el árbol más antiguo
de toda la Sierra de las Nieves ya que su edad está cifrada en
torno a los ochocientos y los mil años de antigüedad.
El Castaño Santo tiene unos trece metros y medio
de perímetro y fue declarado Monumento Natural por la Junta de
Andalucía.
Cuenta la leyenda que en los montes en que se halla este árbol
centenario proliferaron grandes hazañas a lo largo de la Historia.
Entre ellas podemos destacar la rebelión de Sierra Bermeja en los
albores del siglo XVI, cuyo testigo más representativo fue el
denominado Castaño Santo, bajo cuyas ramas el rey Fernando el
Católico celebró una misa de acción de gracias, allá por
1501. |

Casi un siglo después, la historia se repite. En
este caso, el oficiante fue el duque de Arcos, Luis Ponce de León,
quien, por orden de Felpe II, puso fin a la rebelión morisca de
1570. Hoy, el paraje donde acamparon él y sus 4.000 hombres recibe
el nombre de cerro del Duque.
El tesoro esta escondido cerca del Castaño, bajo las raices de un
arbol. Intentad dejar el escondite igual de oculto.

This is probably the oldest tree in de Sierra de la Nieves, its age
is estimated between 800 and 1000 years.
Castaño Santo has a diameter of about 13 meters and is declared
Natural Monument by the Council of Andalucia.
According to the legends in the hills where this century-old tree
is located happened great and important historic events.
From all of those events we could highlight the rebelion on Sierra
Bermeja during dawn of XVI century, in which the most
representative witness was the Castaño Santo.
Under its branches the King Fernando the Catholic did celebrate a
thanksgiving mass there upon year 1501. |

Almost a century later history repeats. In this case the oficiante
was the Duke of Arcos, Luis Ponce de Leon, who, by order of Felipe
II, made an end to the Moorish rebellion in 1570. Today the place
where he and his 4000 man camped is known as Hill of the
Duke.
