Geocache Description:

A quick visit to a kirkyard dating back to the 13th century

The knave of the medieval church of St Mary was demolished in 1692 and replaced by a building more suited to Presbyterian worship. This newer church thrives today as The United Church of Bute which was formed in 1999, by the union of five Bute churches.

All that remains of the ancient church is the chancel which now falls under the stewardship of Historic Scotland. Entry to the chancel is free of charge and inside you will see, among others, The Knights Tomb and The Lady’s Tomb, both dating from the late fourteenth century.

The Lady and The Knight

The cache is not in the chancel but hidden in an easily accessible spot just off the public footpath to The Lades which goes through the kirkyard.

Hidden somewhere here!

This is a busy church and Sunday morning caching might prove problematic. (Parking would be a challenge certainly!) Otherwise, park on the main road at N55 49.720 W5 03.379 and follow the footpath sign and enjoy a quick cache and dash. But why not take more time and see if you can find such wonders as the grave of Napoleon Bonaparte's neice?

You should also have a look at St Mary's Well at N55 49.740 W5 03.377
