Geocache Description:

After seeing pumpkin stands all over the place we decided to have a little fun. We constructed a huge air cannon and randomly shot a pumpkin (or in this case - an ammo can) to figure out a good location for a cache.

The above coordinates are not for the cache, but instead the launch point for an Air Cannon:

Your mission? Using the information below determine how far the ammo can travelled. Then, go to the launch point (the exact point will be obvious at your arrival) and project a waypoint with a bearing of 347 degrees true north and find where the ammo can landed.


The length of the barrel is 15 meters

The height of the barrel is 10.6 meters

The weight of the pumpkin is 4.5 kg

The inside diameter of the barrel is 25 cm

The resevoir for the air tank is 2650 liters

The air pressure when fired is 7 kg/cm

The maximum velocity of the pumpkin is 143 meters/second

Assume no air resistance

Assume no frictional loses

Assume the ground is flat

Assume the pumpkin instantaneously reaches the maximum velocity

Assume the breech end of the barrel is on the ground

Punkin Chuckin is a real sport. The world's record for air cannons is 4,859 feet. Yes almost a mile!! How did this one compare? Please respond by email -- not in your post.
