In the last several months we've had a number of new cachers in
the Lexington area. Let's meet all of the new folks, hide some
caches here and introduce the folks who have hidden all of these
boxes in the woods and on the street corners.
We'll hide a number of different caches on the property here,
and have a laptop available for anyone who needs instruction on
uploading waypoints and using GSAK. Be sure to RSVP which type of
GPSr you'll be bringing if you need additional instruction.
Coordinates are for parking next to our house. Park and come
north up the back fenceline until you get to the open gate, about
120 feet. We'll have some meat for grilling, and some beverages,
adult and otherwise. As of right now, we'll have some chicken and
BBQ sauce to grill, with more to be planned. If you plan on
bringing anything else, please include that in your RSVP.
More info as it develops.
POST PARTY ADDENDUM:
What a great turnout! Thanks to all who showed up, and for
the great food (Who brought the crystallized giner? That stuff is
awesoome!). Thanks as always to our old-time Geocky members in
attendance: sun-moon-starz and koneko, who helped organize this
from the get-go, Maxine&Me, who helped with the new cacher
instruction, and Pwyll, Starshine and Rhianna, who brought a well
camoflaged ammo box as a door prize. Glad to see cachers from as
far as Ashland make it here, as well!
For those who had the opportunity to get some of the computer
instruction, here are a few links to the software that we
discussed:
The Geocaching Swiss Army Knife
(GSAK) for managing waypoints and uploading to your GPSr, and SO
much more!
EasyGPS, a
simpler program for uploading to your GPSr. A good place for most
people to start.
CacheMate, for
putting cache descriptions in your PalmPilot
Also, some people had asked about getting data cables to
upload coordinates to their GPSr. I know that Garmin will sell you
the cable as an aftermarket item, $38.00 for the eTrex. I've had
great use from one the I bought through eBay seller GPSGeek for
$6.79 + shipping. (I'm in no way affiliated with GPSGeek.)
Thanks again to all who made this a good event, and I look
forward to seeing you online on Geocky.org (please do sign on if you
haven't) and at future caches and events!
